Top deck clearance
Here we show how to calculate the following:
- Block height
- Crankshaft stroke
- Connecting rod length
- Piston compression height
- Piston to top deck distance

This is basic information for choosing the right engine components.
You can easily input your own values below to get a result. Keep in mind that small deviations in measurements can lead to large deviations in function later on. Therefore, make sure to enter the correct measurements!
For example, a block may be top-decked (shaved), which should be included in the calculations of block height for an accurate calculation.

Block height

Calculate block height:
(Crankshaft stroke / 2) + Connecting rod length + Piston compression height + Block deck clearance (if the piston sticks above the deck height, subtract this value instead to get block height)
2 ▼
Crankshaft stroke

Calculate crankshaft stroke
Block height - Piston compression height - Connecting rod length - Block deck clearance (if the piston sticks above the deck height, add this value instead to get the crankshaft stroke) = Half of the crankshaft stroke (x2 to get the full crankshaft stroke)
3 ▼
Connecting rod length

Calculate connecting rod length
Block height - (Crankshaft stroke / 2) - Piston compression height - Block deck clearance (if the piston sticks above the deck height, add this value instead to get the crankshaft stroke) = Connecting rod length
4 ▼
Piston compression height

Calculate piston compression height
Block height - (Crankshaft stroke / 2) - Connecting rod length - Block deck clearance (if the piston sticks above the deck height, add this value instead to get the crankshaft stroke) = Piston compression height
5 ▼
Piston to top deck distance

Calculate block deck distance
Block height - (Crankshaft stroke / 2) - Connecting rod length - Piston compression height = Block deck distance up to or above the top deck of the block
